Box Score
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Southern Illinois (4-6) southpaw Cody Forsythe shutdown the Tiger offense as SIU shutout the Tigers 2-0 on Sunday at FedExPark in the final game of the Memphis Classic.
Forsythe allowed eight hits and struck out five in his eight innings of work on Sunday. Salukis closer Aaron Snyder closed the door in the ninth to earn the save and SIU would post the first shutout over Memphis since April 17, 2009 when Houston topped the Tigers 1-0.
After pounding out 16 hits on Saturday night, the Memphis bats went cold as the Tigers could only muster four hits in the first six innings. The U of M out-hit SIU 9-6 on the game, but 11 runners were left on base in the game.
Robby Graham went 3-for-4 on the game and collected the Tigers' first hit in the bottom of the third. Phillip Chapman had a 2-for-4 day at the plate and hit two doubles. Memphis was one-hit away from plating a run, but a key hit didn't happen as the Tigers left nine runners on base in scoring position.
Graham was stranded on second base in the third inning following a two-out double and Memphis left runners on second and third in the fourth inning following a double by Chapman. The Tigers left a runner on second in the fifth and the seventh inning saw runners on the corners and one out, but Forsythe recorded an inning-ending strikeout to end the threat.
Memphis (6-3) would have runners in scoring position in the eighth, but once again, Forsythe would work out of the jam. Freshman shortstop Ethan Gross collected his first career hit to lead-off the eighth and a double by Chapman had runners in scoring position for Adam McClain who flied out to center to end the inning.
Southern Illionis scored one run in the fourth off an RBI-single by Brock Harding. The Salukis added a run in the fifth off of an RBI-double by Wes Neece. Clayton Gant (1-1) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings of work and he was saddled with the loss. Reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Dan Langfield worked two scoreless innings in relief allowing one hit and he struck out two. Tiger closer Ben Paullus worked a scoreless ninth for Memphis.
Memphis will face Auburn in a two-game mid-week set in Auburn, Ala. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday and the two-game series concludes on Wednesday with first pitch at 6 p.m.
