Memphis Defense Spoils Langfield's Complete-Game Effort

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Dan Langfield allowed no earned runs in a complete game performance, but three errors cost the University of Memphis as Eastern Illinois (2-11) took game one of a three-game series 3-1 at FedExPark on Friday. An error by first baseman T.J. Rich allowed lead-off hitter Zach Borenstein to reach second base. A sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly by T.J. McManus gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead. The run scored, unearned, was just the second unearned run the Tigers have allowed this season.
A two-out double by Chad Zurcher followed by an RBI-single by Robby Graham tied the game at 1-1 in the third. Graham collected his second hit of the game and his seventh multi-hit game in eight games.
The Tigers (10-5) would have their first multi-error game of the season as the U of M committed its second error of the night to start the fifth inning. A throwing error by Adam McClain allowed Reese to base and a throwing error by pitcher Dan Langfield one batter later put Panther baserunners on first and third and nobody out.
After a walk to Borenstein, Cam Strang hit the second sacrifice fly of the evening for EIU and the Panthers regained the lead at 2-1. A sharp grounder to first allowed Reese to score and EIU extended its lead to 3-1. Langfield would work out of the jam though with a pop-out to short and a fielder's choice.
Langfield (2 -1) pitched a career-long 9.0 innings, but was tagged with the loss. Langfield allowed five hits and three runs, although no runs were earned. He struck out nine and walked one. Mike Hoekstra (2-2) earned the win after pitching a complete game. Hoekstra allowed just one run on seven hits and he struck out five. Zurcher and Graham led the Tiger offense with two hits apiece and Graham had the lone RBI for the Tigers.
Memphis will look to even the series tomorrow at FedExPark. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and Ryan Holland (3-1) will start for the Tigers. Eastern Illinois will throw Luke Bushur (0-2).
