JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The No. 50 Memphis men's golf team finished up the fall season Sunday with a fifth-place finish (298-289-298=885) at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by ETSU. Senior Jonathan Fly led Memphis on the weekend, tying for third place at even par. The Tigers finished in the top five of all four of their fall tournaments, including a title at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
"It's been a good fall, but we still have a lot of room for improvement going into the spring," said Memphis head coach Grant Robbins. "We have the potential to be a really good team, but there are some key areas we need to address in the offseason."
Memphis went +10 in Sunday's final round to finish +21 overall after battling windy conditions all weekend. The Tigers finished one stroke ahead of No. 9 Clemson in the event while also besting No. 29 Tennessee and No. 35 Virginia Tech among the 15-team field. No. 25 Kent State won the event at +5 with No. 7 Virginia coming in second at +12.
"Overall, it was a good tournament for us," said Robbins. "We just made too many mistakes early in the round today, and then when the wind really kicked up on the back nine, we couldn't get anything going. It was a great experience for us. This was a really strong field, and we were in contention to win on the last day. There is no doubt the experience made us better as a team."
Fly led the Tigers for the second day in a row with a final-round 73, one stroke over par. He birdied the final hole of the tournament to finish -1 on the back nine. Fly shot a 69 in Tuesday's second round and a 74 in the opening round to finish the tournament at even par. Steve Lee was +4 overall after carding a 76 on Sunday, birdying the par-5 eighth hole.
Senior Jack Belote began the final round with birdies on two of his first three holes but struggled on the back nine to finish +3 on the day. His final score of +9 overall tied him for 33rd place. Sophomore Erwan Vieilledent shot a 76 Sunday but carded the Tigers' only eagle of the tournament on the par-5 10th hole. He tied for 40th place at +11 overall. Grant Milner rounded out the Memphis scorecard at +5 in the final round and +15 overall, tying for 56th place.
