MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis basketball fans began filling in their calendars in mid-July with the release of the non-league schedule. Now, Tiger Nation can finish marking its dates with the announcement of Memphis' 2010-11 Conference USA slate on Wednesday.
Game times and television games will be released at a later date.
"This is going to be another interesting year in Conference USA," said head coach Josh Pastner. "This is a league that is improving each year, and 2010-11 will be no different. Last year, I said that Conference USA would be a multiple-bid NCAA Tournament league, and it was with UTEP and Houston making the `Big Dance.' I believe that Conference USA can do the same or better this year.
"Fans are going to notice a change in our league schedule this year with us playing all the East schools home-and-home. The change is an exciting one with new coaches at East Carolina, Marshall and UCF, and then playing our always-tough rival games versus Southern Miss and UAB. The Conference USA schedule offers our young team challenges throughout the season, and we're going to need Tiger Nation out in full force for all of our league games at FedExForum and on the road."
The 2010-11 Conference USA schedule presents a different scheduling format for all the league's schools. Each school will continue to play a 16-game conference schedule, but the home-and-home series for each will change.
Since the 2006-07 season, the league office designated three rival schools for each team and then randomly added two additional schools for the home-and-home opponents. For Memphis, the three rival schools were Southern Miss, Tulsa and UAB, and the two other home-and-home foes were Houston and SMU.
This year, Conference USA is remaining a one-division league, but for scheduling home-and-home series, the conference office is moving to an East-West alignment as in football. With that set-up, the Tigers' 2010-11 C-USA home-and-home series are against East Carolina, Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB and UCF. Memphis' one-time games are Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa and UTEP.
The Tigers tip off Conference USA play Jan. 8 against East Carolina at FedExForum. Memphis then travels to Dallas, Texas, for its C-USA road opener at SMU Jan. 12. The Tigers wrap up the C-USA regular season at home for the fourth-straight year against Tulane Mar. 5 at FedExForum.
Memphis has three tough back-to-back road series after the calendar turns to 2011, and one that includes a trip to Gonzaga in the middle of the league schedule. The Tigers' first back-to-back road series is in mid-January with games at Southern Miss Jan. 19 and at UAB Jan. 22. Two weeks later, Memphis takes a step outside league play with a Feb. 5 trip to Spokane, Wash., to face Gonzaga, and then follows that trip with a game at UCF in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 9. Memphis' final back-to-back road trip comes before the home regular season finale with contests at UTEP Feb. 26 and at East Carolina Mar. 2.
In turn, the Tigers have back-to-back games at FedExForum only once during the conference slate. Memphis hosts Southern Miss Feb. 12 and then welcomes UAB to the Bluff City Feb. 16.
