MEMPHIS, Tenn. - - The University of Memphis women's basketball team has accomplished a lot of `first-time-since' kinds of things this season. The team has its first opening round bye and its highest seed in the league championships since 1999-2000, and Saturday morning, the Tigers found out they had a first team all-conference player for the first time since Tiffany Adkins in 2001 when sophomore guard Brittany Carter (Covington, Ga./Newton County HS) was voted to the Conference USA First Team.
Carter led the conference in scoring with 18.4 ppg and has scored double-digits in 26 of the Tigers' 29 games, including 11 games of 20 or more points. Carter set a new Memphis and Conference USA single game scoring record with a 49-point outing in the win over Sacramento State over Thanksgiving at the University of Washington tournament. She scored 30 or more points twice this season, including a game-winning jumper at Missouri. She also scored game-winning buckets at UCF and at UTEP and has taken on additional ball-handling duties over the last three games in the absence of starting point guard LaToya Bullard.
Carter's 535 points this season is just 44 points shy of a Memphis single season top 10 mark and is the fourth-best sophomore single season scoring total in school history (behind LaTonya Johnson, Tamika Whitmore and Keeta Matthews).
She is one of just four players to earn first team all-Conference USA honors (LaTonya Johnson twice, Tamika Whitmore three times, Tiffany Adkins once) in Memphis' 15 year history in Conference USA.
The Conference USA specialty awards will be announced on Sunday, including the all-freshman and all-defensive teams, the freshman, defensive and sixth player and newcomer of the year awards.
Memphis is prepping for its quarterfinal game in the 2010 GMC Sierra Conference USA Championships. The Tigers will face the winner of the No. 5 East Carolina/No. 12 Southern Miss match-up at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Tulsa's Reynolds Center. Tickets are available for as little as $10 per session or for $50 for an all-session pass for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door in Tulsa.
