MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A hat-trick performance by Gordy Gurson lead Memphis to an 8-0 outburst against Alabama A&M on Wednesday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Gurson's is the first Tiger with a hat-trick since Kevin Walsh accomplished the feat against Marshall in 2006.
The eight goals scored by the Tigers was the highest total since the 2001 team netted a program-best ten goals, against Lipscomb on Nov. 7.
Gurson scored first in the 27th minute and added two more goals in the 66th and 81st minutes. Mark Sherrod and Andreas Guentner each added two goals and Cody McCoy chipped in the game-winner to open the scoring in the fifth minute.
It took only five minutes for Memphis to get on the board as junior Cody McCoy fired a rocket from the top of the box for his second goal of the season. Liam Collins was credited with the first of three assists on the night.
With the goal, Memphis ended a 376:08 streak without a goal. The Tigers had been shutout in their previous three matches, at South Carolina, at Missouri State and at home against SMU.
The Tigers last goal came on a Jamal Keene goal in the second minute at Kentucky, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Sherrod scored the first of his two goals in the 22nd minute after Collins served a free kick inside the box and found Sherrod who headed it in for his second goal of the season.
Sherrod added his second goal of the night in the 61st minute. Collins earned his third assist of the night after serving the ball from midfield to the box where Sherrod headed it for the score.
Guentner scored his first of two goals in the 51st minute after striking from five yards away. Gurson picked up the assist on the play, serving the ball directly in front of the net for Guentner.
In the 72nd minute, Guenter provided the seventh goal of the night for Memphis with a howler from the left side of the box. Dennis Kennetz earned the assist on the play, his first career point.
Gurson finished with three goals and an assist for seven points on the night, the highest Memphis total of the season.
The Tigers finished the night with season-highs in shots (30), corner kicks (12) and fouls (25)
Sophomore Jordan Leedle was not challenged on the evening for his season's third clean sheet.
Assisting on Gurson's 66th minute goal was junior Parker Duncan, who tied Thomas Shannon for the team lead in points with nine.
Redshirt freshman Adam Thornton entered the match late and got his first career point when assisted on Gurson's third goal.
Memphis will host UAB, Friday, in its final match of 2010. It will be the last match in the blue and gray for seniors Rory O'Connor and Eric Trujillo, who will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. The match will also be broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel's "NSCAA Game of the Week".
