Postgame Quotes
UCF 37, Memphis 17
November 27, 2010 - Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium
Memphis Head Coach Larry Porter
Opening Remarks I thought this game was a lot like our season. We had a lot of opportunities, but we just couldn't quite put it together. In the first half, we had some positions that we couldn't quite convert into points. I thought our defense was solid. In the second half, coming out and having that fumble was quite costly. But they (the defense) still fought and hung in there until the bitter end. I thought we gave them a number of opportunities on the plus side of the ball and gave them an advantage in terms of easy scores. But when you look back at this game, I felt that we had an opportunity to win; we just didn't quite put it together.
I thought initially coming out of this game they were much stronger in time of possession than what shows on the (stat) sheet. At this point, we just have to continue to put the pieces together and continue to move forward to build a quality program.
About the upcoming offseason
My greatest frustration is that I felt the kids deserved more. The fight has always been to pursue more and allow them the opportunity to taste victory. But the next phase is recruiting and to continue to build this team. As coaches, we just have to continue to recruit and put the pieces together.
About the interception in the third quarter
Well I thought defensively they (the Tigers) came out and they played. We got a sack and made a few plays, so I feel like they rallied behind the call. But I just can't wait to see it on film. I truly hope that it wasn't pass interference. It appeared that way, but I will wait and reserve judgment until I get a better view.
About the 2010 senior class
I thought they held strong. Those guys were the reason that we were able to come out and compete, play with attitude. They did it, and the rest of the team followed. They held strong. They were just as disappointed as I was but they tried to channel that (frustration) in a way that led to results and productivity.
About quarterback Ryan Williams' progress
If you look at some of the plays he made today, he checked us into the right play, and I thought that was critical. He is beginning to see these things. Without them even moving he knew blitz was coming, and so I thought that was critical in terms of growth. You can sit back and say, "Wow, it is really paying off." He has hung in there and bounced back. He has pursued the film room harder and harder each week, and as a result, he has grown.
Will Ryan Williams start the season next year?
He left the season the starter, so he will begin the spring as the starter. But in this program there is always room for improvement. No jobs are safe.
About graduating offensive linemen
You have got to recruit. I think we will add some junior college guys, but I don't want to go gung-ho because you are still going to have turnover in a couple of years and you are always chasing to catch up. At some point, we just have to get some talented freshmen and allow them to play. I want to get some junior college guys, but I don't want to go wholesale.
UCF Head Coach George O'Leary
Opening Remarks
I'll tell you what--it was a well-fought win. We didn't play as well as we would have liked, but I'll tell you what--it was a big conference win. We secured the eastern division, and now we have the chance to go play SMU in the (C-USA Championship), and we get to host it.
Q: Talk about the importance of hosting the C-USA Championship for three of the last six years.
A: That's big. That's what you like to see. I know our fan base will be excited about it. I know the players really are.
Q: You're the only C-USA team to finish with seven conference wins. What does that mean?
A: Well, I'll tell you what--there's a lot of good teams, good offenses, at least in the conference. I watched there be over 1,200 yards last night in the Tulsa vs. Southern Miss game. Again, it's a good game. We'll have our hands full with SMU. We're looking forward to the game.
Q: You guys were 5-0 on the road this season. What was the secret to success?
A: We had some tough road games, even coming in here today. I think we hit about three senior days. We didn't get homecoming games, we got senior days, and that's probably more important for a football team.
Q: Talk about the importance of recovering the fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half.
A: It really was important. As I said at halftime, 'Let's not let these guys hang around.' I think that was a great opportunity off the kickoff. That sort of set the tempo for the second half.
Q: Talk about the play of Jamar Newsome.
A: He's had an outstanding year for himself as far as the YAC (yards after catch) and making guys miss. He's turned into really an outstanding receiver as far as yards after the catch and just special teams. He does a lot of stuff for this football team.
