Larry Porter quotes Post-Houston 10-30-10
Opening Remarks
"After two weeks, obviously, we thought that we would play better than what we did. It is also becoming obvious to me that our biggest battle is amongst ourselves and learning how to overcome that. I was kind of disappointed in the defense. We didn't stop them in a way that would give us an opportunity to have a chance to get something going. I thought we did some good things in the first couple of drives, but then we kind of stalled. They had a great second quarter that put a lot of points on the board. We didn't answer at all in the second (quarter) and then came back out in the third quarter and did some things that put us in a position to put some points on the board. We put ourselves in a position again that made it hard for us to overcome. I was disappointed, especially when we have a couple of weeks to prepare. Their speed was a big issue. We also didn't tackle as well as I would have liked, even in the first half, to get them off the field. We didn't respond to that and as a result they put points on the board.
Why has it been difficult to establish offensive rhythm?
"Well early on, what we thought we could do we were doing in terms of being able to run the ball. We got some things going there and we tried to balance a little bit more with the passing game because they were starting to load the box. And as they get ahead, people begin to bring a lot of pressure and as a result, especially in the passing game, you get some inconsistencies there. And there are times when we have run calls and they end up sending pressure and it is more than we could block. From an offensive perspective, there was just no continuity and that creates a lot of disruption."
About the late game rally
"I think in terms of offensively, we shifted gears a little bit and started doing some things that they probably didn't practice to try to create some momentum. Greg (Ray) had some big runs, (Marcus) Rucker made some catches. It wasn't anything from a spirit stand point that woke us up, we just shifted gears a little bit offensively. We were able to get a fumble in the back end of the third quarter. We finally stopped them and the guys kept playing, but I think it was more about what we did offensively.
Did their punt return for a touchdown really open the flood gates?
"Yeah, it really did. If we make the tackle, then we have them in reasonable field position and give our defense an opportunity to play but again their speed showed and as a result they ended up scoring."
