Memphis, Tenn. -
The University of Memphis cross country teams return to the course this weekend as they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams will compete at Vaughn's Gap Cross Country Course in Percy Warner Park on Saturday. The men's 8k race gets underway at 9 am with the women's 5k scheduled to start at 10 am.
After running at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Meet Sept. 5, cross country head coach Doug Clark is looking for improvement from the Tiger distance runners.
"It was kind of a shock to everybody, including me, to come in and have your first meet almost immediately," said cross country coach Doug Clark. "We have had a couple of weeks together now to get in a little better shape and I expect us to perform better to an extent from the standpoint that we have been practicing two more weeks together. Physiologically, after you have been training for about three weeks hard, that is when you are going to be the most fatigued before your body starts adapting. I think it's going to be a challenging weekend and we have to keep training together, compete to the best of our ability this week and keep in mind we are pointing toward the conference meet at the end of October."
Junior Jacob Chapman was the highest finisher for the University of Memphis in the 8k at the Brooks Memphis Twilight held on Sept. 5. Chapman finished 37th overall with a time of 21:20.44. Senior Jorgen Ekdahl was second among U of M runners finishing 49th overall with a time of 21:35.50. With an average time of 23:33.03 in the 8k, Memphis finished 19th in the team standings at their first competition of the season.
Freshman Louisa Lingley was the top finisher for the University of Memphis in the women's 5k. With a time of 20:47.47, Lingley finished 73rd overall. The women's distance runners finished 17th overall with an average time of 22:11.99.
The U of M cross country team's return to the Bluff City next weekend for the Rhodes Invitational at Plough Park in Memphis, Tenn. The women's 5k race will begin at 9:30am while the men's 8k is scheduled for 10:10am.
