Former Memphis tailback Frank Fletcher, who rose to fame with the Tigers during the mid 1990s, has been hired as the new M Club Director. Fletcher replaces former director Tim Duncan who left last fall to become an associate AD at UNC-Wilmington.
"We are pleased to announce that Frank Fletcher has accepted the position of M Club director on our staff at Memphis," said Athletic Director R.C. Johnson. "Not only was he an outstanding student-athlete for the Tigers, but as an adult he has found a way to give back by sharing his expertise and life lessons with young people in his community.
"With his knowledge of the University and our athletic department and his enthusiasm to interact with individuals from all walks of life, I could not imagine a person better suited to fill our M Club position."
Fletcher, who received his BBA degree from Memphis in 1995 and his MBA from Shorter College in 2004, began his professional career with Georgia Power Company in 1999 in the Professional Development Participant Program. Following an 18-month program he joined the Southern Company in Atlanta (Ga) and was responsible for growing profitable end-use sales and introducing new products and services to new customers.
In 2006 Fletcher was hired by Mississippi Power Company, a Southern Company, and became responsible for developing and evaluating ongoing management of Mississippi Power's demand response initiatives. During his tenure in Gulfport (Ms.) Fletcher was a member of the Board of Directors of Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast, the Harrison County Board of Education, the American Association of Blacks in Energy, Junior Achievement and was a Mississippi Scholars Volunteer.
A native of Rome, Georgia, Fletcher came to Memphis in 1991 and lettered for four years under former head coaches Chuck Stobart and Rip Scherer. Working as a running back and special teams member, Fletcher built a reputation as hard-nosed player who exemplified the role of a team player.
He scored his first collegiate touchdown in the Tigers win over East Carolina in 1993 but will be forever remembered by Tiger fans for his play against Ole Miss in 1994. With Memphis trailing 16-5 entering the fourth period, Fletcher scored a touchdown to trim the deficit to 16-11 in favor of Ole Miss. One series later, with the Tigers facing a fourth-and-18 situation, he caught a screen pass and raced 18 yards to convert the first down. The Tigers went on to score and win the contest 17-16 marking the U of M's first-ever win in Oxford.
"I'd like to thank both R.C. Johnson and Bill Lansden for giving me the opportunity to rejoin the Tiger family," Fletcher said. "As a former letter winner, I am honored to serve our former and current student-athletes. As Executive Director, I'm committed to cultivating a society that supports and retains current members and engages new student-athletes with the singular mission of becoming the premier letterman's organization in collegiate athletics".
Fletcher began his duties with the University of Memphis on July 20.
