BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Memphis Tigers men's soccer team lost a 3-1 decision to the UC-Irvine Anteaters on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers move to 1-5 on the season with the loss, while the Anteaters are now 4-0-2 this season. The game marked the third game of the UAB "Soccer For A Cure" Classic in Birmingham, Ala.
UC-Irvine kicked the scoring off in the first minute of the game when Amani Walker took a double assist from Irving Garcia and Spencer Thompson and headed it into the goal past Memphis goalkeeper Michael Goodlett, putting the Anteaters ahead 1-0.
The Tigers countered in the 12th minute when Brian Farrell scored his second goal of the season on a header from six yards out. The assist on the goal was from Memphis midfielder Thomas Shannon,a freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla.
UC-Irvine pulled ahead of Memphis in the 34th minute when Matt Murphy put a shot into the top of the net past Goodlett. The goal was Murphy's fourth of the season. The assist came from Spencer Thompson.
UC-Irvine increased their lead to 3-1 on Kevin Santora's first goal of the season off of a cross from Matt Murphy. Santora headed the ball past Memphis' Goodlett.
The Anteaters took 17 shots to the Tigers' 11 shots. Farrell, a junior from Dunboyne, Ireland, had three of Memphis' shots and the Tigers one goal. Farrell and fellow forward Ryan Ruble, a sophomore from Lee's Summit, Mo., were named to the UAB "Soccer For A Cure" Classic All-Tournament team.
Andrew Fontein got the win in goal for UC-Irvine. Goodlett took the loss for the Tigers, moving to 1-4 on the season. Goodlett made six saves while allowing three goals in the game.
The Tigers will face the Central Florida Golden Knights on Saturday, Sept. 20 in Orlando, Fla.
