Melissa McFerrin's women's basketball coaching staff has started to come together with the hiring of Michael Wholey as an assistant coach to the Tiger coaching staff it was announced Wednesday. Wholey joins McFerrin after spending the past season as one of her assistants at American University.
"As we begin to reshape the direction of our program, I am excited to have Michael join our staff," McFerrin said. "He is familiar with our playing style, system and our program values and goals. He also understands our approach, vision and commitment to become the Class of Conference USA. He is a basketball mind, a talented teacher, a motivated recruiter and will make significant contributions to our program."
Wholey's duties at Memphis will include handling perimeter player development, coordinating scouting and film exchange, directing Melissa McFerrin's Hoops School and serving as a liaison to the Fastbreak Club. In addition to those duties, Wholey will also handle a share of recruiting duties, with a specific concentration on the Memphis area.
At American, Wholey held similar duties during his one season in Washington, DC. While with the Eagles, the team won a school-record 12 straight games (including an undefeated road record in conference), capturing its first-ever Patriot League conference title, and appearing in the post season for only the third time in school history. As the perimeter coach, he played a key role in the development of First Team All Conference selection, Liz Hayes.
Prior to American, Wholey held positions in both the WNBA and at the junior college level. For two seasons, he served as Video & Travel Coordinator of the San Antonio Silver Stars in the WNBA. There, he was responsible for all aspects of team travel, as well as handling all video responsibilities, including both opponent and self-scouting. He also worked closely with the coaching staff in putting together opponent scouting reports. While in Texas, Wholey also had a stint as an assistant coach with the nationally-ranked junior college, the Odessa College Wranglers, in Odessa, TX.
Wholey earned his bachelor's degree in Visual and Media Arts from Emerson College in 2004 and was also member of the men's basketball team. After graduating, Wholey got his start as the Video Coordinator for the Boston University men's basketball team.
The Marshfield, Mass., native is the son of Paul and Nancy Wholey. Wholey played for his father at Marshfield High School. Both of Wholey's siblings play college basketball. His brother Bryan will graduate from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in May 2008 and his sister Katie just finished her sophomore year at Tufts University in Somerville, Massachusetts.
