DALLAS, Texas - - The University of Memphis men's tennis team (6-9, 0-3 C-USA) battled in its first of two matches at nationally-ranked opponents, but fell short, 6-1, against No. 58 SMU Saturday afternoon.
Memphis, who is undergoing a difficult two-match road trip in Texas on Saturday, came out ready for the task, picking up an 8-6 at No. 1 doubles to counter a SMU victory at No. 3. The decisive No. 2 doubles match went all the way to 9-7, but despite the Tigers' best effort, SMU won the No. 2 match to go up early, 1-0, in the match.
The Tigers battled in the six singles matches, with sophomore Charlie Ramsay winning his No. 5 singles match, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9. But despite some remaining close matches, that one point was all Memphis could put in the books, as SMU claimed wins at No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles to close out the victory.
The Tigers are currently playing at Baylor in a match that began at 7 p.m. (CDT). Live stats for that match can be viewed at: http://baylorbears.cstv.com/livestats/m-tennis/xlive.htm. The Tigers won the doubles point in that match with victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles and are all in their first sets of singles as of 10 p.m.
