Game 17
Southern Miss (9-9, 1-3) - 47
#2/2 Memphis (17-0, 4-0) - 83
Memphis Head Coach John Calipari
That was one of our best efforts this year, maybe one of the best efforts since I've been here. When you talk about the pace the game was played, the way we defended and contested shots and had five turnovers. At that speed, that's incredible. I thought we shot the ball well. We gave up too many offensive rebounds; they beat us and scrapped us, and really they did it when I subbed guys. But at the end of the day, we were good today. We were good.
I was happy for our fans, and I said on our radio before let's not be talking about No. 1. Let's win the game, and we'll talk about it after that. So I wanted them to enjoy the moment of this basketball team and what they're doing and how they played.
How about the crowd. It was packed. Packed. I saw a few 100 seats open in the upper deck in the end zone up top. They're coming to see us; they're coming to see this team. They're coming to see these players perform, and they're cheering Pierre Niles when he does his thing, or Jeff Robinson dives on the floor the fans were all into it. It was great.
Southern Miss Head Coach Larry Eustachy
Well obviously we were totally outmatched. They have tremendous talent. I thought we started the game well. I thought we were physical with them. We shot as poorly as any team I've ever had, and when you don't shoot well it affects your whole game. But make no mistake about it, Memphis had everything to do with why the score was what it was. Memphis is a terrific team.
They have no weaknesses whatsoever. And I joke about John (Calipari), but he's a terrific coach. He's been to the Final Four before. I was surprised about how they shot the ball. I didn't think they were that good a shooting team. They really shot the ball from the perimeter well. They didn't have that last year. They've really improved their shooting. I have played against Michigan State and some national championship teams, and they're every bit as good as those teams.
