NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Led by 16 first half points from sophomore Latoya Bullard and with scoring from eight different players, Memphis grabbed back-to-back conference wins with a 74-66 victory over 2006-07 C-USA regular season champion Tulane Friday night. The C-USA road win is the Lady Tigers first since Jan. 21, 2005 (an 80-51 win over UAB).
"Our defense kept us in this game in the second half," Head Coach Blair Savage-Lansden said. "Latoya Bullard did a good job of creating shots in the first half, then finding her open teammates in the second half."
Led by 16 first half points in the first 15 minutes of the half from Bullard, Memphis led 39-33 at the break. Memphis then got scoring from seven other players, spreading the ball around for 12 assists on 17 field goals in the opening 20 minutes as Bullard drew two and three defenders to her on the drive.
Tulane kept trying to chip the deficit, but Memphis held at six throughout most of the second half, with the Memphis defense holding the Green Wave without a field goal for over five minutes in the early part of the second half. By the time the Green Wave got their offense back on track, Memphis was still unable to pull the lead to double-digits and when Chassity Brown hit a three-point field goal with 59 seconds remaining, the Lady Tiger lead was 68-66. Jessica Hall then stole an inbounds pass following a Tulane timeout, and stepped to the line to hit a free-throw. Bullard then stole the ball that Tulane was quickly trying to inbound and hit Hall for a lay-up for 71-66 with 23 seconds remaining. From there, Memphis hit three free-throws to seal their second straight win for the first time this season.
"In the second half I decided to get my team more involved because my shot wasn't falling," Bullard said. "Our defense, we've been picking it up in practice, and now we're carrying it out during the games.
