Memphis freshman Garrett Hachtel struck out five and allowed just one earned run in his first collegiate appearance, but Samford was able to take advantage of a Tiger error and score the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to clip Memphis 2-1 in a pitcher's duel on Tuesday afternoon. The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for the U of M.
Hachtel gave up three hits in his debut, and at one point retired 14-straight batters. But he did not get much support from his offense as the Memphis' offense was forced into 14 flyball outs by Samford starter Chandler Tidwell.
Tidwell sat down 19 consecutive Tigers in a complete-game effort and allowed just one hit over the last six innings. After hitting Bill Moss with a pitch to load the sacks in the third, the righthander sat Memphis down in order from the fourth through eighth innings. Tidwell quieted the Tiger offense to just three hits on the day.
What little offense that was produced in the game, came in the first three innings. Samford leadoff hitter Kyle Krebs drove Hachtel's first collegiate pitch over the leftfield wall for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
Memphis knotted the game at 1-1 in the third after Alex Fennell led off with a single up the middle and K.K. Chalmers drew a walk. Moss was hit by a pitch and Adam Amar lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring Fennell home.
Samford scored the game-winner in the sixth after shortstop Michael Marseco snapped Hachtel's string of 14-straight outs with a single to rightfield. He stole second and then came home on a two-out error.
Sophomore Matt Yokley tossed two shutout innings. The Collierville, Tenn. native gave up one hit and fanned three.
The Tigers and Bulldogs will hit the field again tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
