Memphis Notes vs. Tulane
October 27, 2007
• Captains for Memphis were seniors Taz Knockum (Baton Rouge, La.) and Heath Grant.
• Junior Tony Bell registered his first start of the season when he was in at safety for Alton Starr.
• Senior linebacker Quinton McCrary recovered a fumble with Tulane at 2nd-and-goal from the Memphis 1-yard line with just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. The fumble recovery marks the sixth of the season for McCrary, which sets a new all-time Tiger record. McCrary had been tied for the record at five with Van Anderson who set the record in 1974. The fumble was forced by Greg Terrell, the second for the sophomore defensive lineman.
• Duke Calhoun extended his receiving streak to 19 games with his 10-yard reception in the second quarter. The sophomore receiver has caught a pass in every game he has suited up for the Tigers and currently ranks 16th all-time in receiving yards and is tied for 15th in receptions. Calhoun ended the day with five catches for 39 yards and a TD. He has tallied multiple receptions in 16 of 19 career games.
• Sophomore defensive lineman Steven Turner registered his first career sack when he dropped Anthony Scelfo for a loss of three yards in the second quarter on 2nd-and-10 from the Memphis 46.
• Earnest Williams logged his first rushing touchdown of the season on a 3-yard reverse with 11:47 remaining in the second quarter. It was his fourth career rushing TD and his eighth overall career score. Williams scored later in the quarter off a 47-yard pass from Martin Hankins.
• Alton Starr was credited with his first career interception when he picked off Anthony Scelfo on 1st-and-10 from the Tulane 33 with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter. Memphis scored as a result of the turnover.
• The Tiger defense has forced its opponents to turn the ball over at least two times in each of the eight games this season. Memphis has also forced at least one turnover in each of the last 10 consecutive games.
• Martin Hankins tossed his 27th career passing touchdown to Earnest Williams with 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Memphis the 14-13 advantage. The touchdown was the fifth career receiving TD for Williams and the second reception for a score of the season. The 47-yard reception was also a career high for Williams, and he is also the first Tiger to score multiple touchdowns in a single game. The touchdown came off the turnover in which Alton Starr picked off Anthony Scelfo's pass on the previous Tulane drive. It is the fourth touchdown this season that the Tigers have scored off a turnover.
• Martin Hankins went into the lockerroom at the half with 231 yards on 16-of-26 passing, marking the first time this season that the senior from Hattiesburg, Miss., has passed for over 200 yards in a single half. The last time he registered 200-plus yards in a half was last season against Marshall when he passed for 223 in the first half.
• Carlos Singleton and Earnest Williams both extended their receiving streaks to 16 and 13 games, respectively. Singleton finished the day with two receptions for 17 yards, while Williams totaled a career high 96 yards with a TD on three catches.
• Running back Joseph Doss carried the ball 15 times and rushed for 50 yards against Tulane, and now ranks seventh all-time in the Memphis record books for career yards with 1,952.
• Michael Grandberry busted off a 50-yard return on the opening kickoff of the third quarter, which was a season long for Grandberry. The junior made four returns for 124 yards in today's game, marking his fifth career game over 100 yards. Grandberry, who has only returned kicks for the last two seasons, currently totals 1,255 yards on 56 returns and broke the school record for career kickoff returns and return yards, which was previously held by William Arnold (1987-90) who totaled 1,202 yards on 55 returns.
• Receiver Maurice Jones had a career day for the Tigers. He totaled a career high 117 yards on four catches. It is the first time Jones has gone over the century mark and is the second game in a row the Tigers have had a 100-yard receiver.
• Freshman quarterback Matt Malouf reached Carlos Singleton on a five-yard touchdown pass for the second passing TD of the season for Malouf. It was the third TD catch for Singleton who is now second on the team in scoring with 22 points.
• Martin Hankins passed for a career high 355 yards, completing 25 of his 38 pass attempts today with two touchdowns. It is the 3rd time this season; and the fifth time in his career that Hankins has passed for 300 or more yards.
• Freshman Darius Davis logged his first series on defense in the fourth quarter at corner. Davis broke up a would be touchdown pass in the quarter on third down. Tulane then missed the ensuing field goal attempt.
• Martin Hankins completed his second touchdown pass of the game with 36 second left on the clock in the fourth quarter to Duke Calhoun. It is Hankins 28th career TD and 10th of the season. The touchdown reception is Calhoun's third of the season and ninth overall.
