Kyle Norrid went 5-for-6 and drove in six runs to lead a 20-hit attack as Memphis pounded UCF, 20-4 in the series-opener at Jay Bergman Field Friday night. Freshman pitcher Scott McGregor (6-3) tossed seven solid innings to post his sixth win of the season and fourth Friday night C-USA win.
McGregor had a rocky start, giving up two runs in the first inning, but the Tigers offense backed him up and took the lead for good with a four-run third. Cory Barton got the offense going with his first hit--an infield single. Barton went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, and six other Memphis starters had multiple hits. Consecutive singles single by Bill Moss and Will Petersen made it 2-2. The Tigers gained the lead on a single by Norrid.
Memphis posted a pair of runs in the fourth, and then used a pair of free passes and a Golden Knight error to plate four in the fifth to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
The Tigers put the contest away with seven tallies in the sixth. Michael Murray and Ben Grisham led the inning off with hits and, following a throwing error by UCF, both scored on a single up the middle by Barton. The highlight of the inning was Norrid's bases loaded triple off the centerfield wall to give Memphis a 17-3 advantage. Norrid's triple was the Tiger's lone extra base hit of the night.
Memphis wrapped up the scoring with a two runs in seventh on an RBI-single by Moss. Moss finished the night 3-for-6.
The loss was the sixth-worst loss in conference play for UCF, who was held to nine hits by McGregor and reliever Tim Senter.
K.K. Chalmers, Petersen and Murray had two hits each. Chalmers scored a career-high five runs.
The two teams will meet for game two of the series on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
