DALLAS, Texas - The University of Memphis duo of senior Rodney Carney and sophomore Darius Washington Jr. was named to the 2006 All-Conference USA first team, the league office announced Monday. Freshman Shawne Williams was picked to the All-C-USA third team. The all-conference teams were voted on by the league's head coaches and select media members.
It is the third time in the last six seasons under head coach John Calipari that Memphis placed two players on the All-Conference USA first team. Antonio Burks and Sean Banks were first team picks in 2004 and Dajuan Wagner and Kelly Wise were first teamers in 2002. It is also the fourth time in the Calipari era that a Tiger freshman made one of the league's three squads, as Wagner (first team in 2002), Banks (first team in 2004) and Washington (third team in 2005) also received the honor.
Carney, the Conference USA preseason Player of the Year, led the Tigers in scoring (17.9 ppg), three-pointers made (88) and three-point field goal percentage (39.8). A 2006 Naismith Award and Robertson Trophy candidate, the Indianapolis, Ind., native moved into the top five on the Memphis career scoring chart and set the school record for three-pointers made this season. Last year, Carney was named to the All-C-USA second team.
Washington, a 2006 Bob Cousy Award finalist, is second on the squad in scoring (13.9 ppg) and leads the team in assists (96). The Winter Park, Fla., native is nearing the 1,000-milestone as he has 973 career points. Washington, the 2005 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, was also selected to the All-C-USA third team a year ago.
Williams leads all C-USA freshmen in scoring with a 13.0 average (third on team). He is second on the squad in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and has 41 blocked shots and 41 steals. The Memphis, Tenn., native is the Tigers' top free throw shooter at 78.1 percent. Earlier this year, Williams earned Rivals.com National Freshman of the Week honors.
