Memphis Head Coach John Calipari
"They packed that boy (lane), and they just went back in the lane and said, `You're going to shoot jumpers.' We're like, 'We're not going to shoot jumpers.' We took 15 threes but didn't make many of them. We get up 17 and we do the old `We're going to do something crazy. I'm going to make them watch this play,' which is what we have a habit of doing, and they're back in the game."
"It's a good win against a team that was 9-1. If we don't beat somebody by 40, everybody is saying, `What's going on with the Tigers?' They have scholarships too. They came out and had a game plan on how they were going to play, but they turned it over 19 times."
UTEP Head Coach Doc Sadler
"When you lose a guy (John Tofi) that is getting double-digit points and double-digit rebounds, it always hurts. We lost a good rebounder, and they took advantage of it. They really did a nice job of making adjustments and John (Calipari) did a nice of job of getting them to go inside, and we didn't have an answer."
"Playing defense and putting pressure on people is what we do best. When you give up 66 points to a team that is averaging more than 80 without John Tofi in the ballgame, you have to be happy. You know, we have not been giving up offensive rebounds, and they come in and get 14. That's just a credit to them. They did a nice job, and that is something that we haven't been doing."
"We can't use losing John (Tofi) as an excuse. They beat us. They beat UTEP's team."
"There are so many positives about Memphis' team. With what John (Calipari) has done with his team, obviously, I don't think he has gotten enough credit to take freshmen and play like they have. `Are they talented? You bet they are,' but he's done a great job and rotates them well. They are an awfully good basketball team, and they most definitely wear you down."
