Memphis Head Coach John Calipari
"I didn't like the start of the game. The first two shots were not how you start a game. We had a leaping leaner and a fade-away with a guy on us to start the game. But what I liked was as the game got going and we had a big lead, we never got out of whack. We kept running our offense."
"I thought our defense was good, and then I played the dreaded zone for a while which I think everybody's like, `Wow.' But we have a zone and we work on it. I just don't use it that much. That's a big zone. When you talk about 6-9, 6-9, 6-9, 6-6, and 6-7 at one time, that's who we had out there. There's arms and legs everywhere, and I think they did a nice job. In the second half, I think we did some good things."
"Kareem (Cooper) was terrific. He has been working out 6:30 in the morning. He's been working hard at practice. He has been humble about this whole situation. I told him, `You're fighting for time and Waki (Williams) was playing well.' He went in and now he's trying to get his own minutes. I really wanted to give him a lot of minutes today because again, I really think he's going to have an impact."
Southern Miss Head Coach Larry Eustachy
"It wasn't a long night. I'd like to play 20 more minutes. I thought it was a great learning experience, particularly for our guys who have never been in this environment. I thought Donatas (Visockis) was a bright, bright spot. I was really impressed with the limited time that he's had to go out there and really belong. That's very encouraging."
"Most of the game we had three freshman out there, and that's tough. I know people would say that they've got freshman out there too, but they've got professionals. These are first rounders, lottery picks."
"When you don't make baskets, it really triggers a lot of bad events. That's where the program is at right now. We can't fight through the adversity without dropping our heads a little bit. But we fought to the end, and we learned a lot."
"This is a team that could win the national championship, so let's make no mistake about it; who you play and where you play them is huge. We could play these guys 100 times and get closer, but we're just stacked up against us right now."
