EL PASO, Texas (AP) - Joseph Doss ran for three touchdowns and Memphis, formerly winless in Conference USA this season, denied UTEP a sixth victory for bowl eligibility with a 38-19 win Saturday night.
Memphis (2-10, 1-7 Conference USA) won for the first time in nine games and earned its first road win this season.
UTEP (5-7, 2-3) led only once and finished the season losing five of its last six, costing the Miners a chance at three straight bowl seasons for the first time in school history.
Memphis quarterback Martin Hankins completed 16-of-26 passes for 218 yards. Doss rushed for 82 yards and Duke Calhoun caught five of Hankins' passes for 129 yards.
Jordan Palmer led UTEP with 307 yards and a touchdown to Daniel Robinson, who also caught a second score from Kyle Wright.
UTEP's Reagan Schneider kicked a career-best 56-yard field that give the Miners their only lead, 3-0, with 1:58 left in the first quarter.
But Memphis countered quickly, taking the lead on a 2-yard Doss touchdown run early in the second quarter. The Tigers went on to build a 10-6 lead at halftime and steadily pulled away.
