POST-GAME NOTES AND QUOTES
Memphis Head Coach Tommy West
"We did a good job of trying to come back, but we did not deserve to win the game. Until we learn how to play without making mistakes, and without doing the things that people do to lose, we are not going to win."
"I've done an awful job of getting our team to understand how you win and how you lose. It is very frustrating and disappointing, but we will not win until we learn how not to lose."
"Right now we did everything we can to lose the game and did not deserve to win. We cannot spot a team 14 points every week. We spotted Southern Miss 21 in the first quarter and spotted this team 14 in the first quarter. We cannot do that and expect to win. Offensively, we matched them with points in the first half, but we come out and don't do anything with it in the second half."
UCF Head Coach George O'Leary
"It's a good win. Anytime you win on the road, it is a good win. We made it exciting; I'll tell you that. It was a good solid game. Obviously, both teams made plays. We made maybe one more play than they did. It's a good win. It's a conference win. I'm happy for the kids."
"I think we made the big kicks and it was a big win as far as that was concerned. (Michael) Torres came up big with the field goals"
"He (Steven Moffett) did some good things. I started him tonight because I think he practiced better the past week and a half. I haven't changed. Whoever practices the best is going to play. I felt Stephen did a better job during the week moving the football team into the game plan."
MEMPHIS GAME NOTES
• On offense, Phillip Beliles and Taz Knockum registered their first starts of the season. Knockum started at receiver as Memphis lined up with four receivers; and Beliles started at center. On defense, free safety Wesley Smith was back in the lineup after missing the Southern Miss game with an ankle sprain.
• Michael Grandberry ran his second kickoff return of the game 61 yards for the longest return by a Tiger this season. The return ultimately led a 24-yard touchdown catch by true freshman Duke Calhoun. The 61-yard return by Grandberry was also the longest kickoff return since P.T. Jones posted a 68-yard return against Tulane in 1997.
• Duke Calhoun caught a 24-yard pass from Martin Hankins for his fifth receiving touchdown of the season and then followed it with a 27 yard TD reception in 4th to put Memphis ahead. It was his first multi-touchdown game. Calhoun has caught a pass in each of the 10 games this season. He has logged TD catches in five of the last eight games. The Memphis native ended the night with six catches for 100 yards. The 100 yard reception game is his second of the season. He had 109 yards against Chattanooga.
• Tight end Arron Bentley registered his first career catch when he caught a 16-yard pass from Martin Hankins in the second quarter.
• Joseph Doss scored his second receiving TD of his career when he caught a 28-yard pass from Martin Hankins to tie the score 14-14 in the second quarter. Doss has caught a pass in each of the 10 games this season. He finished the night with two catches for 25 yards as well as 59 yards rushing on 12 carries.
• Senior receiver Ryan Scott extended his receiving streak to 11 games with eight catches for 47 yards today. Scott's streak dates back to the 2005 Motor City Bowl. His eight catches gives him 108 on his career moving him into the No. 6 spot all-time at Memphis. He is also seventh all-time in receiving with 1,486 yards.
• Receiver Mario Pratcher completed his second career pass when he reached quarterback Martin Hankins on a 15-yard toss after receiving the lateral from Hankins.
• True freshman Matt Reagan booted a 40-yard field goal to send the Tigers to the locker room at the half tied, 17-17. The kick was a long for the freshman whose previous high was 31 yards against Marshall. Reagan is now 1-of-3 from 40 or more yards this year. He also was 3-for-3 on PAT's in the game and totaled six points.
• Michael Grandberry logged 138 yards on kick-off returns today for the most return yardage since Joseph Doss rolled off 110 yards on five returns last year against UTEP. Grandberry just missed the 100-yard mark last weekend when he totaled 94 yards on three returns against Southern Miss.
• For the sixth time this season, quarterback Martin Hankins has completed 20 or more passes in a single game. Hankins completed 27 of his 41 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns. He has also attempted at least 30 passes in seven games this season.
• Duke Calhoun recorded his first multiple receiving touchdown game when he caught a 28-yard TD pass from Martin Hankins in the fourth quarter to give Memphis the 24-23 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Calhoun is second among the Tigers in scoring with 42 points, just behind fellow true freshman Matt Reagan who totals 45 points kicking.
• UCF's 148 yards rushing marks the third time in the last four games the Memphis defense has held opponents below 150 yards rushing in a game.
