Memphis Head Coach Tommy West
On the Game: "I have to give UAB credit. I thought they played well. I thought our guys played hard with good intensity. I felt that we got pushed around defensively. We had an unbalanced formation and they just kind of pushed us around a little bit. There was not a whole lot we could do about it. They had a better team. We fought well, and we just came up on the short end. Every time we got some momentum, they took it away. I have to give them credit for that. It was like we could get some momentum and take the lead, and then they would come right back on us. We've got to keep going. We have to keep getting better. It's bad right now. It's not good. I've got to do my job a lot better than I have been doing it. I have got to try and find a way to give this football team a chance to win a game."
On coming to UAB: "I was concerned coming in because they are huge. We don't match up well with their size, so I was concerned that they would push us around some. We can't give up the long plays. That's what is killing us."
On preparation: "A week ago, we thought we had a good match up on the outside. We knew coming in that they block really good defensively. They are experienced. They are all seniors. They've been playing together for a while. We thought we would have to throw the ball to give ourselves a chance to win the game. We did. I thought we threw the ball well. I thought we protected it really well and threw it pretty good. It was picked there at the end, but I think that it was a little bit on desperation on that".
On his young team: "We've got some young guys that are making some plays. I think Duke (Callhoun) played great. Duke doesn't play like a freshman. I think Duke is one of the best players on our team. (Carlos) Singleton made some plays. I thought T.J. (Pitts) had a really good week at practice. I hate that he had the fumble on the kickoff. I thought he made some progress. I think some of our younger guys got pushed around defensively."
