Memphis Head Coach John Calipari
"It was what we thought it would be. They are just one of those teams. How about the shots that they made down the stretch? How about the errors that we made? Again, it's just inexperience. I give Winthrop credit. They had Auburn and Alabama beat. They had a chance with us. They beat Marquette on the road and you can see why. They have really good size."
"They rebounded better against us than Texas. That's a fact. Winthrop had 18 offensive rebounds and Texas had seven offensive rebounds (Texas shot 40 percent). Winthrop shot 36 percent for the game. It's not like one team shot 60 percent and the other didn't."
"I'm just happy that it is over. This is one of those games that you schedule at the beginning of the year for one reason, and that is to help our RPI. Then, as the game gets closer, you don't want to play it because they are really good. Now, that we have won the game, it is a great game for us. So we are going to move on and get ready for league play."
Winthrop Head Coach Gregg Marshall
"I thought our guys really battled admirably today. I thought they took all the negativity thrown our way and handled it like the warriors they are. They hardened and played the No. 4 team in the country to the wire in a tooth-and-nail game."
"I have a lot of respect for John Calipari and his Memphis program, and this nice facility they play in. Our guys did not take a step back today, and we did not flinch one time. I hope Memphis has us back because they were a wonderful host and have a wonderful team with great talent. If we are able to play them on a neutral court, we'll see what happens."
"Phillip Williams had a great game and that dunk was a poster-type dunk. I hope someone got a picture of it."
"I had no idea we would out-rebound Memphis by six (36-30), but 17 turnovers are too many to have."
