Memphis Head Coach John Calipari
"I wasn't overly pleased with our energy and the emotion that we played with tonight. The way we are (energy and emotion) are key to what we are doing. I understand it's hard. You're up 15 or 16, but this was a 10-to-11 point game most of the game. We did turn them over some."
"The first half we missed 14 two-footers. At some point, we've got to make those shots. In the second half, we made them, but you've got to make the ones that are near the basket. You can't miss them all. We shot from the three-point line, which is 19 feet 9 inches, we doubled our percentage of what we shot from two feet. How can that be? From two feet we shot 20 percent, and from 19 feet 9 inches, we shot 42 percent. Now how can you do that? We've done it. We are doing it over and over. We are missing shots we have to get in the basket if we're going to be what everybody expects us to be."
"The energy wasn't what we need it to be and we'll see. We've got a tough one on Wednesday. They (Tennessee) are coming in here with one mindset, kind of like Gonzaga. They think they are beating us. They've got half the city that thinks they are beating us. Hopefully, the other half thinks we are beating them. I know this. Their whole game is based on energy and effort and emotion and shooting threes, so we are going to have to get after it."
SMU Head Coach Jimmy Tubbs
"I thought we were a little bit jittery the first four or five or six minutes, but Memphis had a lot to do with that. Once we slowed down, we did okay. There were some mistakes we made in the first half that led to some breakaways."
"Memphis is the best team we've played all year long. They are so athletic. They're very good basketball players, and then you put that with the great coaching job that John Calipari does, John does a great job of coaching them."
