Memphis Game Notes, November 19, 2005 MEMPHIS 24, SOUTHERN MISS 22
• Michael Denning had his first career start today at right guard. He replaced Andy Smith who tore the PCL in his right knee at practice on Wednesday. Smith had previously started all nine games this season.
• Redshirt freshman Antonio McCoy also had his first start tonight at wide receiver. McCoy replaced Carlton Robinzine who suffered a serious burn to his left hand Thursday evening. Robinzine will miss the remainder of the season, and became Memphis' eighth starter lost to a season-ending injury this year.
• With his 11 yards rushing on the second play of the game, DeAngelo Williams surpassed Cedric Benson for the No. 6 spot on the NCAA all-time rushing list. Coming into tonight's game, Williams needed just three yards to take over the No. 6 spot which Benson held with 5,540 yards from 2001-04. Williams later surpassed Travis Prentice (Miami (OH), 5,596 yards) and Charles White (USC, 5,598 yards) for the No. 4 spot with 5,661 yards. Williams is now behind Tony Dorsett who is third all-time with 6,082 yards for Pittsburgh from 1973-76.
• With his 123 yards rushing and 29 yards receiving tonight, DeAngelo Williams now totals 7,210 career all-purpose yards and holds the NCAA record in that category. He entered the game ranked third, and passed Ricky Williams who previously held the NCAA record with 7,206 yards for Texas from 1995-98.
• Maurice Avery scored his ninth career rushing touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter. Avery, who became Memphis' fourth quarterback this season, also totals 11 receiving TDs and four passing touchdowns.
• O.C. Collins recorded his eighth career interception; his second of the season, when he picked off Dustin Almond's pass in the second quarter. Collins also picked off a pass against UTEP. The Tigers have intercepted a pass in seven of the 10 games this season. Collins' pick resulted in a Memphis touchdown.
• Junior receiver Ryan Scott caught four passes for 89 yards today to extend his streak to 16 games of at least one pass reception.
• Heisman Trophy candidate DeAngelo Williams rushed for his 50th career touchdown when he scored on a four-yard run in the second quarter that put the Tigers up, 14-3. Williams also totals four receiving TDs for his career.
• Brandon McDonald recorded his third interception of the season on a key pick with under two minutes remaining in the first half. McDonald was credited with a 38-yard return, which is the longest of the season. The previous long was a 37-yard return by McDonald last week against Tennessee.
• DeAngelo Williams recorded his first touchdown reception this year on a 29-yard pass from Maurice Avery. Williams now totals five career TD receptions, and Avery totals five passing TDs.
• Brandon McDonald blocked Darren McCaleb's PAT in the third quarter, marking the first blocked PAT for Memphis since 2003 against Arkansas State.
• DeAngelo Williams rushed for 123 yards today to mark his 32nd career game of more than 100 yards rushing. The NCAA record is 33 games, which was set by both Archie Griffin and Tony Dorsett.
• Stephen Gostkowski booted his 15th field goal of the season when he hit a 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give Memphis the 24-9 lead. Gostkowski is now 15 of 18 on the year and 63 of 85 for his career. Gostkowski totaled six points kicking today and continues to hold the C-USA record in scoring with 343 points.
• With the 24-22 win tonight, Memphis has defeated USM in Hattiesburg for the first time since 1984 when Memphis won, 23-13. The only other time Memphis had defeated USM in Hattiesburg was in 1960.
