MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tiger guard Jeremy Hunt, who was expected to contribute in the Memphis backcourt during his senior season, has been dismissed from the men's basketball team. Head coach John Calipari, who suspended Hunt indefinitely for violation of team policy and a University agreement two weeks ago, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
"Much to my regret, but in the best interest of our basketball team, I have permanently dismissed Jeremy Hunt," said Calipari. "I think the University and I have gone out of our way to give Jeremy every chance to be a part of this program, but we can not allow his actions to continue to be an ongoing distraction for this team."
During early morning hours of Sept. 18, Hunt was involved in an incident on Beale Street which demonstrated an ongoing pattern for Hunt and called for his dismissal from the basketball squad.
"Jeremy knew he had very little room for error after last year's incident," said Memphis Athletics Director R.C. Johnson, who met with Hunt and Calipari on Tuesday afternoon. "I believe that he was given more than his fair share of opportunities to be a part of our basketball team."
Hunt, who has lettered for three years, scored 625 points during his career, including a career-high 24 points against Northeastern in the 2005 NIT. Despite battling injuries throughout most of his career, Hunt averaged 9.5 points per game during his 66 games played.
"Jeremy will remain in school and complete his degree work," Calipari stated. "We all wish him the best in his future endeavors."
