Four Conference USA standouts were named to the Associated Press Football All-America teams in an announcement made on Monday by the news organization. Southern Miss LB Michael Boley earned a spot on the second team, while Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams, UAB WR Roddy White and Louisville OL Travis Lefew were each named to the third team. All four players earned first-team All-C-USA honors this season.
For Boley, the All-America recognition was his sixth of the season after being named a first-team All-America by Cingular/ABC Sports (FWAA) and a second-team All-America by The Sporting News, SI.com and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The league's Defensive Player of the Year, Boley ranked third in C-USA in tackles with 117 and second in the nation with five forced fumbles. The senior added seven sacks and 16 tackles for a loss this season.
The AP honor is Williams' second All-America selection of the season after SI.com named him a second-team member last week. The junior led the nation with 22 touchdowns this season, which also broke school and conference single-season marks. His 1,828 rushing yards this season were the most ever in a single season in C-USA and University of Memphis history. With 3,942 career yards, Williams is the all-time leading rusher in Memphis history and ranks second in C-USA annals. The junior picked up his second C-USA Offensive Player of the Year honor as well sharing this year's award with Louisville QB Stefan LeFors.
White helped lead UAB to its first-ever bowl game (Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, Dec. 24 vs. Hawaii) this season after hauling 65 catches for a C-USA single-season record 1,339 yards. With 13 receiving touchdowns, the first-team All-C-USA pick is just one shy of tying the single-season conference record. White ranks second nationally with a 121.7 ypg average this season and is the nation's only receiver with at least 60 receptions to average more than 20 yards per catch.
Lefew picked up his second All-America honor of the season after being selected to the SI.com All-America second team released last week. Lefew is the first AP All-America at UofL since Anthony Floyd made the second team in 2000 and the first offensive player to do it since Ibn Green in 1998.
