NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Memphis was shutout, 4-0 by Tulane as the Wave completed the C-USA series sweep on Sun. at Turchin Stadium. Kevin House extended his current hitting streak to four games after going 1-for-4 for the Tigers, while Josh Payne, Michael Lewis and Jordan Hart each added a hit.
Freshman Stephen Gostkowski held Michael Aubrey and the Tulane offense at bay until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Green Wave plated four runs after the freshman hit Jonny Kaplan sandwiched between singles by Penedo and Tony Giarratano. With the bases loaded, Aubrey singled home Penedo and Kaplan for a 2-0 lead. Tommy Manzella's single to right scored Giarratano and Aubrey came around to score on the play after catcher Kurt Welch cut Manzella down at second after he tried to advance on the throw to the plate.
"We played better today," said head coach Dave Anderson. "You have to play well to beat Tulane. They are a good team with a lot of weapons."
Memphis threatened to score in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings as five Tiger baserunners reached scoring position. However, the Tigers were unable to get the timely hit to cross a run, leaving seven runners on base the ballgame.
"Leaving runners on base has been one of our biggest problems all year. We have not been able to get them in." Anderson said.
Giarratano led the way for a powerful Tulane squad with a 3-for-3 performance, while Aubrey added a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI.
Gostkowski took the loss on the hill for Memphis, going 5.0 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits, while striking out four. Brandon Rowan shut the Green Wave offense down, giving up just one hit and striking out three over the final three innings of the contest.
Freshman Cory Hahn struck out eight and allowed four hits in 6.2 of shutout work to record the win for Tulane. Tyler Kimmons came on in relief of Hahn to strike out four en route to retiring all seven Tiger batters he faced in 2.1 innings.
