Albert Means, a former prep all-American defensive tackle at Memphis Trezevant High School who became embroiled in a recruiting scandal at the University of Alabama before transferring to Memphis in 2001, has been declared academically ineligible for the 2002 season. Means failed to meet minimum academic requirements during the 2001-02 school year.
"I am disappointed that the team will be without Albert," said head coach Tommy West. "I have strongly encouraged him to continue to work towards regaining his eligibility for the 2003 season.
"But our team is waiting for no one and we are moving in a very positive direction. I can assure you that the players and coaches are looking forward to the start of the season."
Means came to Memphis as a transfer from the University of Alabama after questions arose about his recruitment by the Crimson Tide. He was declared eligible for the 2001 season by the NCAA and started seven games for the Tigers in 2001. Means logged 51 tackles, including four for lost yardage and added one quarterback sack and one pass interception.
Means is currently attending summer school at the U of M and is trying to regain his eligibility for the 2003 season.
