Memphis Blasts TCU 4-0 In C-USA Women's Soccer Action

Freshman Nicky McLeod had a pair of goals and Katarina Wicksell recorded her third straight shutout as the University of Memphis women's soccer team scored a season-high four goals in route to a 4-0 blanking of the TCU Horned Frogs Friday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. It was a night of firsts for the Lady Tigers as they held a league opponent scoreless for the third straight match.
It was the first time that feat has been accomplished by a Memphis squad in the school's history and the Lady Tigers are the first C-USA team to win three straight league matches via the shutout this season. Memphis evened its C-USA record at 4-4 and improved to 8-7-1 overall. TCU fell to 1-5-2 in conference play and 2-10-5 overall.
Midfielder Kirsty Marr gave the Lady Tigers the only goal they would need in the 7th minute when she blasted a free kick from 18 yards out through the hands of TCU goalkeeper Ruth DeJong. It was the third goal of the season for Marr, all of which have been game-winners for the sophomore from Scotland.
Wicksell came up big again for the Lady Tigers who outshot TCU 18-11 in the match. The junior keeper made three saves including two diving stops down the stretch to preserve the shutout and put herself in the U of M record books.
"Our team is coming together at the right time," Head Coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Good teams play their best soccer at the end of the year. We're halfway there for the weekend and we have to start preparing for a tough match against Houston Sunday. Hopefully we can come out with the same intensity that we did tonight."
Midfielder Alison Baker extended the Memphis lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute when she took a pass from fellow senior Becca Amrozowicz and worked her way free for the goal. Baker's goal equalled her career high of six in a season that she set last season. Amrozowiczs' assist was her fourth of the season tying her with Marr.
It took just over two minutes following Baker's goal for McLeod to give the the Lady Tigers a three-goal cushion with her first goal of the night. She finished off a corner kick that had been deflected by a pair of Horned Frogs to give Memphis a season-high three goals in the first half.
McLeod added an insurance goal in the 65th minute when she battled for a loose ball in front of the TCU net just barely sliding the ball past a diving DeJong. Marr set up the goal with her fourth assist of the season. McLeod is now second on the team with four goals on the year. Baker had a team-high five shots. Nicole Carman, Jenny Swanson, Cara Toulouse and Jennifer Schroeder each had two shots for TCU.
Memphis returns to action Sunday for its home finale at 1 p.m., when the Lady Tigers face Houston in another pivotal C-USA match. Sunday's match has been designated as "Fan Appreciation Day" and all U of M alumni and all fans wearing blue will receive admission for only $1.
