Midnight Madness Begins Hoops Season at Memphis

Basketball at The University of Memphis got off to a late start Friday night as the Tigers played host to Midnight Madness in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The evening included performances by the Memphis cheerleaders and dance squad, the U of M band as well as a variety of games and introductions of both the women's and men's basketball teams and a midnight scrimmage.
Billy Richmond, a transfer from Vanderbilt who becomes eligible at the conclusion of the fall semester scored six points to help lead the White squad to a 27-22 win over the Blue. The White team was made up of Memphis's five newcomers as well as senior Chris Massie and junior Modibo Diarra.
Massie added four points to go with five rebounds and three assists. Freshman walk-on Clyde Wade had three points, three rebounds and four assists.
Antonio Burks, Duane Erwin and John Grice each had six points for the veteran Blue. Erwin also had four boards in the 15-minute scrimmage.
Memphis begins workouts Saturday and are expected to hold two practices each day through the first of next week.
The U of M has a public practice slated for Oct. 21 in The Pyramid and will play the first of two exhibition games Nov. 5 against the Universal All Stars. The Tigers open the regular season Nov. 14 against Syracuse at the AT&T Wireless Coaches vs. Cancer Classic to be played in Madison Square Garden.
