MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior forward Alison Baker scored Memphis' lone goal as the Lady Tigers blanked Ole Miss, 1-0, for their first-ever win over the Rebels at Echles Field on Monday evening.
Baker, a native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, converted from just inside 30 yards on assist from freshman midfielder Susannah Wells. Wells played another ball from midfield during the first half and narrowly missed her second assist when freshman forward Michelle Sorensen's shot went wide right.
Sophomore keeper Katarina Wicksell and freshman sweeper Angela Willoughby anchored the Lady Tiger defense. Wicksell totaled four saves, including one nifty stop on a point-blank Ole Miss shot during the first half. Willoughby's aggressive play helped spoil several Rebel opportunities in the second half.
The Lady Tiger goal came at the 6:50 minute mark and Memphis played keep-away long enough for Wicksell to pick up her second-consecutive shutout. Memphis was outshot 9-4 and did not get off a single attempt in the second half.
Coming into this contest, Memphis was 0-4-1 all-time against Ole Miss. With the win, the Lady Tigers improve to 2-2-1 on the season.
Memphis is riding a two-game winning streak and has a chance to shock C-USA when they square-off with the conference's top two teams this weekend. The Lady Tigers are back in action when they head to St. Louis for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Billikens followed by a 1 p.m. match at Marquette on Sunday.
