New Orleans, La.-- - The University of Memphis men's tennis team (16-9, 1-3) upset No. 5 seed Southern Miss, 4-1, at the C-USA Championships, Sunday, in the fifth-place match.
The Tigers now await a May 3rd internet broadcast to determine if they will make the field of 64 for the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship. Memphis was ranked No. 71 heading into the conference tournament, falling to No. 47 Tulane in the second round. Tulane upset No. 1 seed South Florida to win the C-USA Championship, Sunday, to earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers' hopes may be dimmed by the fact that Southern Miss fell out of the national rankings just four days before the conference tournament started.
Memphis opened the fifth-place match by winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2 singles. The Memphis lead stretched with wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, but Southern Miss closed the gap with a win at No. 6.
Junior Michael Chamberlain, Head Coach Phil Chamberlain's son who transferred to Memphis from Middle Tennessee State at the beginning of this year, clinched the match with a come-from-behind, three set win at No. 5 singles. Chamberlain lost the first set 5-7, but came back to win sets two and three, 6-1, 6-3, to seal the match. Chamberlain leads all Tigers with 19 singles wins this season.
The win against Southern Miss avenges a loss to the same team in the fifth-place match last year in the league championships as well as a loss in the finals of the Anteater Classic in Irvine, Calif. earlier this year.
