Memphis, Tenn.-- - The University of Memphis men's tennis team (5-6, 0-2) is happily back in Memphis after completing a 10-match road trip where they went 3-6 and were rained out while leading Troy State. The Tigers took advantage of some home cooking with a 6-1 win over Texas-Pan American, Friday morning.
Memphis has looked to get each match off to a strong start by winning the singles point, and Friday morning's match was no expection, as the Tigers swept No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, 8-2, and claimed the No. 1 match, 8-5.
Head Coach Phil Chamberlain then switched his line-up since the Tigers will play again Friday afternoon, moving Joe Schmulian up to the No. 1 match and Alistair Todd up to No. 3. Schmulian battled, but held off UT-Pan American's Matt Gower, 7-6, 7-5, to win at No. 1, while Todd easily handled Enrique Bastante, 6-1, 6-2.
"We played solid," Chamberlain said. "That's a good sign for us when we play consistently solid all the way through the line-up and don't have some guys up and some guys down."
Memphis will face Austin Peay State University, Friday, at 1:30 p.m.
