Peoria, Ill.-- - Despite 17 kills from senior April Harriman who suffered from dehydration after Friday night's victory, the University of Memphis volleyball team (1-1) dropped a 3-0 match to host Bradley University in their 10 a.m. match, Saturday.
Memphis battled the host Braves, who were coming off a 3-1 win over Toledo, Friday, in game one, pulling out to a 6-1 lead on a string of five consecutive points scored on junior Emily Eichmann's serve. But an experienced Braves squad pulled even on a Tiger blocking error at 8-8 and won the ensuing battle 16-14 after the Tiger blocking game struggled to handle a balanced Bradley attack that saw three hitters post double-digit kills.
Memphis again ran out to a big lead in the beginning of the second game, leading 5-0 before Bradley pulled even at five on a Tiger ball-handling error. Harriman sided out the Braves' serve and helped Memphis to a 9-7 lead with four consecutive kills. But while the Tiger attack was firing on all cylinders, the blocking and passing games started to waver, allowing Bradley to pull ahead at 9-8. Memphis didn't score again in the second game, falling 15-8 in game two.
It looked like Bradley may close up the match ahead by eight points in the third, but after allowing Harriman a rest from play in the smoltering fieldhouse, the Tigers regrouped for one more attack, pulling all the way up to nine points before Bradley finished game three, 15-9.
Memphis will finish its tournament schedule against the University of Toledo at 2:30 p.m., Saturday.
