HOUSTON - The University of Memphis Lady Tiger soccer team (8-10, 3-8) lost it's third game in a row on Sunday afternoon, after being shutout by the Cougars of Houston (9-8-1, 5-5-1), 3-0. The Cougars got the best of the Lady Tigers in every offensive category, outshooting Memphis, 14-8. Freshman Goalkeeper Katarina Wicksell faced a potent Houston attack and actually finished with five saves, in the loss.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars pounced on the Lady Tigers early into the second period when Kristen Hogan converted a penalty kick, giving Houston a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars kept the pressure on, scoring again 13 minutes later when Melissa Raymer beat Wicksell on an unassited strike which pushed the lead by two. Houston eventually put Memphis away with another goal in the 77th minute securing the Cougars fifth conference win while the Lady Tigers lost their third straight C-USA match.
Unfortunately for Memphis, after dropping both matches this weekend, including a 3-1 loss at Saint Louis on Friday, they are no longer in the running for a trip to the conference tournament which will be begin in St. Louis on October 31st.
The Lady Tigers will return home for a couple days rest before taking off to Nashville for a match with intra-state rival Vanderbilt University on Wednesday, October 25th at 7 p.m. The Commodores are currently 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the SEC.
