BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - RIP SCHERER QUOTES: "Usually in this game, the team that plays the best wins, and that was certainly what happened today. UAB made plays and we didn't. They did what they had to to win while we made mistakes on offense, defense and special teams. We had too many penalties on offense and special teams and they occurred because we lost our poise."
"We had adjusted our personnel this week on our field goal and PAT teams and we still had a blocked field goal. That's flat embarassing."
(When asked about bowl game possibilities) "We don't need to worry about any bowl games. We need to worry about next week's game. We are a long way away from being bowl eligible."
"We have to get better on offense and develop some consistency. We didn't handle the corner blitz all day long which put pressure on our quarterbacks. This was a disappointing loss. We let this one get away."
* SCHERER STARTS SECOND GAME AT QB: Sophomore quarterback Scott Scherer started his second collegiate game at quarterback today against UAB. The son of head coach Rip Scherer, Scherer had his first career start last week against ECU and led Memphis to a 17-10 win. The walk-on completed 10 of 21 pass attempts for 130 yards today. His interception in the fourth quarter with just 1:11 left on the clock was his first pass pick in 46 attempts in the last two games.
* SCHERER GAINS SECOND SCORE: Sophomore quarterback Scott Scherer scored his second career touchdown and his second in two weeks, on a one-yard run against UAB. The scoring play was set up on a 31-yard pass play from Scherer to Bunkie Perkins to the two-yard line. Scherer is now tied with Sugar Sanders for the lead in rushing touchdown this season with two.
* GRAVES HAS CAREER LONG PUNT: Senior punter Ben Graves had his career long punt when he booted a 64-yarder in the first quarter of the UAB game. Graves, who is averaging 40.4 yards per punt this season, bettered his old mark of 61 yards against Louisiana-Monroe on September. Graves' punt pinned UAB at their nine-yard line.
* WHERRY SEES ACTION: Junior tailback Dernice Wherry returned to action today after missing the ECU game with a bruised knee. Wherry was injured in the first half of the Southern Miss game and was unable to play in the win over ECU. The speedy tailback has missed much of the season with injury. He suffered a sepa rated collarbone in the LA-Monroe game and missed two weeks.
* WHITE HAVING TOUGH YEAR: Tiger All-American kicker Ryan White, who made five field goals in last year's UAB game, has had a tough season so far but it may not be his fault. White has missed five field goals this year, including a second quarter kick today and they have all been on blocks. The Georgia native had two FG attempts blocked in the Louisiana-Monroe game and two blocked in the ECU contest. The block by UAB in the second quarter was his fifth miss of the season. If White's kicks are not blocked, he is perfect at 7-for-7 on the season.
* DEFENSE RECORDS SAFETY: The University of Memphis defense registered its first safety of the season when UAB deep snapper Chad Ferranz launched a punt snap over the head of punter Ross Stewart into the UAB end zone. Tiger cornerback Jason Brown raced in and touched the punter down in the end zone.
* ANGLIN RETURNS TO ACTION: Sophomore quarterback Travis Anglin returned to action in the third quarter of the UAB game marking his first playing time since the second quarter of the Arkansas State game. Anglin suffered a high ankle sprain against the Indians and has been out for the past three games. He replaced Scott Scherer in the third quarter when Scherer suffered leg cramps. Scherer came back into the game on the next series.
