Lady Tigers Receive JUCO Commitment

Junior college standout Pasha Cook has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Memphis women's basketball team as released by Lady Tiger head coach Joye Lee-McNelis.
Cook joins the Lady Tigers following a stellar career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Miss., where she played for coach Greg Holmes. The 5-8 point guard will help fill the void left by senior Heather Phillips. Cook finished her sophomore season at MGCCC averaging 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals a game. She was the captain of her squad, and was named to the all-state second team and played on the Mississippi All-Star team.
As a freshman, Cook served as co-captain of the Bulldogs and averaged 15.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals a game. In her first season at MGCCC, she was named as an honorable mention all-state pick.
"We are delighted that Pasha has become a member of the Lady Tiger Basketball family," said coach Joye Lee-McNelis. Her experience will be a great benefit to us in the leadership of our team on the floor. She is quick, and her 'on-the-ball' defense is the best I've seen in quite some time.
"Pasha is one of the best athletes that I will have the opportunity to coach," added McNelis. "I expect her to be a tremendous asset to our program and I expect that she will make an immediate impact on this squad."
The Houston, Texas, native graduated from Robert E. Lee High School where she was named the team's Most Valuable Player and the Best All-Around Player in 1991-92. She joins two other Houston natives on the Lady Tiger roster including Melissa Abraham and Tiffany Collins. In two years at MGCCC, she has recorded a 3.38 grade point average and has served as a resident advisor.
"I love the University of Memphis and all of the opportunities that the U of M has to offer," said Cook. "I am going to enjoy being a part of such a successful program. It has always been my dream to play for a coach like Coach McNelis. I am truly thankful that they believe in me."
Cook is the fourth signee to join the 1999-2000 squad. She joins Deanna Farr (Pontotoc, Miss.), Shannon Hamp (Monroe, La.) and Tamika Rogers (Jackson, Miss) on the Lady Tiger roster. Also suiting up for the first time next season will be Patrice Boyd who redshirted this past season after transferring from the University of Kentucky.
