Former high school coaching standout Keelon Lawson is in his third season with the University of Memphis, and first as Director of Player Development.
Lawson spent two seasons with the Tigers as an assistant coach, helping lead the Tigers to a 37-29 record over two seasons.
Lawson came to the University of Memphis from Hamilton High School, where he was the head coach from 2003-14. During his 11-season career, he helped guide the 2005-06 squad to a perfect 39-0 record and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class AAA State Championship. The undefeated season was the last from the city of Memphis, as the Wildcats finished the season ranked No. 7 in the USA Today Boys Basketball Super 25 poll.
For his efforts that season, Lawson was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA), the Memphis Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Coach of the Year, and a finalist for the 2005-06 Black Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
His 2013-14 team won the Region 8 Championship, and advanced to the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament quarterfinal round, and ended the season with a 27-7 overall record. He also led the team to a 2006-07 District 16 title, and District 16 runner-up finishes in 2004-05 and 2007-08.
From 2001-03 he was the head varsity girls coach at Hamilton High School, and served as assistant women's basketball coach at LeMoyne-Owen from 1996-98.
A Memphis, Tennessee, native, he graduated from Union University in 2010.
