Kat Kundmueller is in her first season with Memphis in 2015-16, serving as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations. Kundmueller oversees both internal and external needs for the Tigers, including team travel, practice set-up and inventory control.
“Kat brings previous operations and coaching experience to our program,” said head coach Melissa McFerrin. “As a former student-athlete and coach, she understands the rigors, needs and challenges of our coaches and players. In addition, Kat has a tremendous desire to mentor our student-athletes and I trust the values she brings to our program.”
Kundmueller joins the Tigers family after spending the previous two seasons (2013-14, 2014-15) as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. The Blue Hose posted a 16-15 record last season, including a 10-3 home mark. Presbyterian finished with the nation’s fifth-ranked defense (52.0 ppg allowed) and the country’s eighth-best field goal percentage defense (34.9). Kundmueller worked with the Blue Hose guards, guiding freshman Cortney Storey to the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year honor.
Prior to her stay at Presbyterian, Kundmueller coached at Faulkner (Ala.) University three seasons from 2010-13. The Lady Eagles improved in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) standings each of Kundmueller’s three campaigns, and in her final season in 2012-13, Faulkner climbed as high as No. 18 in the national poll. In that 2012-13 season, Faulkner qualified for the program’s first NAIA National Tournament appearance and knocked off No. 12 Xavier in the first round.
In addition to its sparkling 26-7 record, Kundmueller helped Faulkner post the second-best field goal percentage defense and field goal percentage in NAIA Division I in 2012-13. The Lady Eagles also ranked in the nation’s top-15 in assists, rebound defense, rebound margin, scoring defense, scoring offense and scoring margin in Kundmueller’s final season as a coach — all improvements from the previous two seasons.
Before entering the coaching ranks, Kundmueller played point guard for NCAA Division II’s Abilene Christian University from 2007-10. In her career, she posted a number of the school’s assists records, including career assists (584), career assists per game (5.1), single-season assists (213 in 2009-10), single-season assists per game (7.6 in 2009-10) and single-game assists (16 vs. Texas Woman’s, Jan. 5, 2009). Kundmueller ranked second in the nation in assists per game in each of her final two seasons.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native was a two-time All-Lone Star Conference (LSC) honorable mention pick. She also earned LSC All-Academic Team recognition her final two seasons.
Kundmueller helped the Wildcats to four-straight winning campaigns, including an NCAA Division II regional appearance in 2009. Abilene Christian posted a 70-45 overall record in her four seasons.
She graduated from Abilene Christian University with a degree in psychology in 2010.
