Tigers Climb Leaderboard to Finish Fifth in California

CAMARILLO, Calif. – Memphis women's golf closed play at the Southern California Invitational on Tuesday with a fifth-place finish after posting a three-round total of 44-over par at Sterling Hills Golf Club.
The Tigers showed improvement throughout the tournament, carding rounds of +36, +5 and +3 to climb the leaderboard over the final two days and finish in a three-way tie with Murray State and North Dakota State in the 15-team field. Their final round 3-over total was the second-best round of the day.
Emily Wilson paced Memphis individually, finishing 9-over par to place 19th overall. Wilson highlighted her week with a 1-over 72 in the second round and finished the event tied for fourth in the field with 37 pars.
Claire Swathwood followed closely behind, finishing 21st at 10-over. Swathwood delivered one of the most productive weeks in the field, tying for fourth with 11 birdies and finishing even on par 3s, which tied for the second-best mark in the tournament.
Tilly Garfoot recorded Memphis' lowest round of the event, firing a 1-under 70 in the final round to close the tournament. Garfoot finished 23rd at 12-over and also produced one of the tournament's most notable highlights with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole in round two, tying for the most in the field.
Rounding out the Memphis lineup were Malia Cottriel and Claire Todd, who each finished 18-over for the tournament. Cottriel posted a strong 1-over 72 in the second round, while Todd added a pair of consistent rounds in the low 70s over the final two days.
As a team, Memphis finished third in the field with 36 birdies and ranked fifth in par-4 scoring while also posting the fifth-best average on par 3s.
Nebraska captured the team title at 10-over, followed by Notre Dame (+23) and CSU Northridge (+28).
The Tigers will return to action later this month as they travel to the mid-state for The Nashville Invitational hosted by Lipscomb on March 23-24.
