No. 14 Tigers Score in 12 Seconds to Beat UT Martin
Sep 07, 2025 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – No. 14 Memphis women's soccer scored the fastest goal in program history on Sunday night, finding the back of the net in 12 seconds and riding the lead all the way to a 1-0 victory over UT Martin at the Track and Soccer Stadium.
The Tigers (6-0-1) finish non-conference play undefeated and improve their streak without a home loss to 33 games.
"We challenged the girls to come out really fast, and we obviously did," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "I think it became a problem of comfort after that. We've got to be better at breaking teams down when they pack it in. Winning isn't easy, so you take it and you move on."
Memphis took the opening kick and drove it straight at the Skyhawk defense through Ashley Henderson. The junior captain played it to Alex Mackay who slipped a pass through the defense to Ellis Kelly, and Kelly's cross found the feet of Perron for a goal after just four passes.
The Tigers remained on the front foot for the entirety of the first half, tallying eight shots compared to zero for UT Martin (0-4-3) but only finding the target three times. They totaled 14 corner kicks but were not nearly as menacing without their regular freekick specialist Ai Kitagawa, who missed the match with a foot injury.
The ball remained in the foremost section of the Tiger attack in the second half, but they were unable to find any insurance goals. UT Martin took their first and only shot in the 70th minute, but freshman keeper Ava Galani was able to handle it and keep her first clean sheet in the first start of her career.
Memphis will begin American Conference play at Charlotte this Thursday, September 11, at 6:00 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
