No. 17 Tigers Score Late Again in 1-0 Victory at South Florida
Sep 29, 2024 | Women's Soccer
TAMPA, Fla. -- The No. 17 Memphis women's soccer team registered their fifth second-half game-winner of the season on Sunday afternoon, as a 74th-minute goal from Anna Hauer sealed a 1-0 victory over South Florida at Corbett Stadium.Â
Â
Relying on their once-again rugged defense, the Tigers (7-1-1, 2-0-1 AAC) kept their third consecutive clean sheet and their fifth of the season.Â
Â
In what was a highly anticipated match-up between the AAC's top two preseason teams, the game began with both sides weary of conceding an opening goal, prioritizing keeping a firm shape in defense. Memphis gained early control but failed to test Leire Herraez Gallach; Ai Kitagawa's shot was blocked at the top of the box and Camber Hayes' long-range effort went narrowly wide.Â
Â
The home team grew into the game as the half progressed, forcing goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman into some crucial saves. The half ended with neither team being able to sustain attacks, and the Bulls were able to carry some of their momentum into the second half with a strong start.Â
Â
The game tilted when head coach Brooks Monaghan re-inserted Maddie Eskin, who took a 10-minute breather, back on the left wing following a hydration break. Less than two minutes later, Eskin received the ball from Kitagawa and lofted a cross into the middle of the USF penalty area for Hauer to sling her right foot onto it for her third goal of the season. Â
Â
Bierman ended the game with four saves, and the defense in front of her limited the Bulls to just eight total shots. Memphis is now the only unbeaten team in the American and the only to team that is yet to concede.Â
Â
The Tigers will be back home this Thursday, Oct. 3, to take on Charlotte at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
