Alemany Named AAC Player of the Year, Lands All-Conference Honors Alongside Barry
May 01, 2024 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's tennis junior Pablo Alemany has been voted as the 2024 American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year by the league's head coaches, while he and Charlie Barry have also earned spots on the all-conference squads.
Alemany, who was the 2022 AAC Freshman of the Year, earned all-conference selections in both singles and doubles and becomes the first Memphis player to earn AAC Player of the Year honors.
The Valencia, Spain native earned the honor after compiling 43 total wins this season, playing at the No. 1 spot for The American's highest-ranked team in the ITA rankings.
Alemany is second on the team with 22 singles wins (all but one at the No. 1 spot) and ranked as high as No. 55 in the ITA singles ranking. He currently holds a No. 30 ranking in doubles with Barry while racking up 19 wins together.
The junior has knocked off two ranked singles opponents this season and five ranked doubles tandems.
Alemany earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Singles Championship, is an alternate for the NCAA Doubles Championship and helped the Tigers earn an NCAA tournament appearance for the fourth consecutive season.
Barry nabbed his first-career AAC postseason honor after playing lights out in doubles. He and Alemany have teamed up to go 19-10 together this season, including a 12-7 mark in the spring dual season at the No. 1 position.
Overall, Barry has posted a 24-11 mark in doubles alongside six different partners in 2023-24.
The duo of Alemany and Barry finished runner-up at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in the doubles with a 6-1 record. They became the first Tiger duo since Joe Salisbury and David O'Hare in 2013 to reach the final.
They earned a trip to the ITA National Fall Championships and advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to No. 13 TCU.
With their performances this season, Alemany and Barry have earned spots into the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships, which will be held the week after the Tigers take part in the team championships.
Alemany was selected as an at-large to the singles draw, while the duo landed as the third alternate in doubles.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19. Oklahoma State University serves as host.
