MUNCIE, Ind. – The Memphis women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season on Wednesday evening, falling on the road to Ball State, 95-66.
The Tigers (2-2) went toe to toe with the preseason MAC favorites in the opening quarter, trailing 18-14 after 10 minutes, but the Cardinals won the second and quarters by a score of 56-28 to establish a firm lead.
Quinzia Fulmore opened the scoring with an offensive rebound and put-back, but Ball State (3-0) would score the next seven points before Hannah Riddick got to the line to halt the run. The Memphis defense held the hosts to 33 percent shooting in the opening stanza and only trailed by four after Fulmore scored in their last possession of the quarter.
The offense stuttered to open the second quarter, going the opening four-and-a-half minutes without a bucket as the Cardinals extended the lead to 12 before a Tilly Boler three. Both Boler and Ball State's Zuri Ransom received technical fouls in the second quarter for a scuffle, and Ally Becki hit a three-pointer as time expired in the half to make the Cardinals' lead 42-27.
Ball State went on a scoring monsoon in the third quarter, scoring 32 points propelled by a 13-0 run to balloon the lead to as large as 36 points. Tiger turnovers were too much for the visitors to overcome, losing the giveaway battle, 21-8, and allowing 22 points off those giveaways.
Elauna Eaton led the way for the Tigers with a career-high 20 points thanks to 4-for-5 three-point accuracy. Tanyuel Welch flirted with a triple-double, scoring 10 points to go with nine rebounds and seven assists.
Ball State was led by guard Ally Becki who had 22 points, 10 assists and seven steals. Ball State took nearly 30 more shots (88-59) than Memphis, capitalizing on the offensive glass and causing havoc on defense.
The Tigers will return home for a weekend off before hosting Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
