No. 15 Tigers Carry Momentum Into Conference Battles with Charlotte, Temple
Oct 02, 2024 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The No. 15 Memphis women's soccer team will host Charlotte on Thursday night at the Track and Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m., followed by a trip to America's birthplace to take on Temple at 6 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
Â
The Tigers (7-1-1, 2-0-1 AAC) will be looking to build upon their two victories collected last week, 1-0 results against UTSA and South Florida on Thursday and Sunday, respectively. They are the final unbeaten team in the AAC and have not lost a conference game since October 2022, marking 18 games unbeaten including the conference tournaments. Â
Â
Game One: CharlotteÂ
Memphis will play host to a Charlotte team (1-6-4, 0-1-2 AAC) that is looking for their first conference win of the season. They earned draws against South Florida and East Carolina and narrowly lost to Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton. They also held No. 25 Clemson to a scoreless draw on Sept. 8.Â
Â
A historically successful program, Charlotte has won four conference championships and appeared in the NCAA Tournament five times. They are under the leadership of Brandi Fontaine, who is in year three as head coach after four seasons at High Point University. Â
Â
A second-year member of the AAC, the 49ers have only played Memphis three times since 2005, with two of them coming last season. Momo Nakao scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory at Charlotte, and Anna Hauer opened the scoring in a 2-0 victory in the AAC semi-finals. The Tigers have won the last four contests between the teams, but Charlotte won the first nine matchups from 1995 to 2004.Â
Â
Game Two: TempleÂ
The Owls (2-10, 0-3 American) are the only other team in the conference also searching for their first three points on the conference season. They narrowly lost duels with East Carolina and Tulsa and lost in not-so-narrow fashion on the road to North Texas, 6-0.Â
Â
The Tigers own a 9-1-1 all-time record against Temple, winning the last eight contests dating back to 2016. In those contests, Memphis has scored 20 goals and conceded only once.Â
