MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team has added to their staff as Shelby Gibson has been named as the Assistant Director of Operations/Special Assistant to the Head Coach.
Gibson comes to Memphis after spending the past two years at Blackman High School where she served as an assistant coach for the Lady Blaze. During her tenure in Murfreesboro, Gibson helped the team to 81 wins and three consecutive trips to the Tennessee AAA State Championship Tournament.
"Shelby is one addition that I was very pleased to make to our staff," said head women's basketball coach Alex Simmons. "I have known Shelby since she was in high school and had the privilege to coach her while at Ole Miss and she brings great energy and basketball IQ to our staff and players. Shelby is someone who, as a Tennessee native, has a lot of passion for women's basketball. I know she will flourish on our staff at Memphis."
After playing for two seasons at Ole Miss, Gibson finished her collegiate career at the University of Alabama where she played in nine games for the Crimson Tide before medically retiring.
Gibson started as a standout at Ole Miss where she was named as a two-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree. In 62 games with the Rebels, Gibson averaged just over 6.5 points per game and was the first rookie since the 2006-07 season to earn multiple Freshman of the Week honors.
During her sophomore season in Oxford, Gibson played in all 31 games for the Rebels where she scored in double figures 10 times, including three games with 20+ points.
A Tennessee Sportswriters Association All-State honoree, Gibson helped lead Oakland High School to the state championship game in her junior season. Gibson, who was a top-60 prospect according to Prospects Nation, finished her junior season averaging 14.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting over 60% from the field.
Gibson graduated from the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in sports administration in 2020. She received her Master of Arts degree in sports management in May 2021.
