MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis left-handed pitcher Dalton Fowler was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, the conference announced Monday. In addition, Fowler was one of four athletes to earn a unanimous First Team All-AAC selection.
Fowler's 104 strikeouts over 78.1 innings are the 19th-most in the country this year. In American play, Fowler was dominant – compiling a 3-2 record with a 3.09 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 46.2 innings. The hard-throwing lefty racked up a dozen strikeouts in five innings against Tulane on April 1 and followed that up with a seven-inning, 13-strikeout and two-hit performance in a win over Cincinnati on April 7. Fowler becomes just the second Tiger to be honored as conference pitcher of the year (Erik Schoenrock, 2013, C-USA).
Joining Fowler on the First Team is fellow left-handed pitcher Dalton Kendrick. Kendrick's 12 saves are fifth-most in the nation this season and are the third-most ever by a Tiger pitcher. His 20-career saves are also the third most in program history. For the season, Kendrick sports a 3.83 ERA to go with a .93 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 40 innings.
Third baseman Logan Kohler was named Second Team All-AAC for his stellar play at the plate and at the hot corner. Kohler leads the Tigers with a .328 batting average, has slugged 10 home runs and driven in 32 runs and ranks second on the club with a dozen doubles.
Freshman RJ Jimerson and redshirt-freshman Luke Ellis each landed on the AAC All-Freshman Team for their contributions this season. Jimerson started 38 games in the outfield and at DH during his freshman campaign, batting .237 with a pair of home runs, seven doubles and 18 RBI. Ellis was second on the team with 24 relief appearances and made four starts on the mound, compiling a 3-3 record and 4.42 ERA while striking out 34 batters over 38.2 innings.
The Tigers begin AAC Tournament play tomorrow night against No. 3 seed Wichita State. The Tigers and Shockers are the final game of the day, and first pitch will be thrown approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of No. 2 seed Houston and No. 7 seed Tulane, which is slated for a 3 p.m. start. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+.
